Festivals and Events in Venice

It’s certainly a different experience to be in Venice during one of the many festivals that are celebrated here. The city takes on a different hue and normal things such as public transport (on the water) can be disrupted. But this doesn’t matter to the visitor or the local Venetian who is eager to become a part of the rich traditions of the city and enjoy the colourful spectacle that is before them.

Venice celebrates a vast number of festivals – both religious and cultural. There are some Venice festivals that are renowned the world over such as the Carnevale or the Venice Biennale. Venice enjoys each festival with a great deal of celebration and pomp. One of Venice events that superbly showcases the city as a culture hub is the Venice International Film Festival which has been running strong since the past 75 years.

Here’s a list of some of the festivals in Venice that you must certainly not miss if you’re in the city.

The Venice Biennale is more than a century old. Dedicated to art, architecture, dance, film and theatre, it is one of the most prestigious forums that showcases contemporary art. There are artists from 86 countries who come together for this event.

A robust and lively affair, the Venice Carnevale has something for everyone. Taking place in February, in the weeks leading to Mardi Gras, Venice bears a fantastical façade. There are pageants and spectacles and most events take place in St. Mark’s Square. There are celebrations everywhere but see if you can attend a masquerade ball.

On the third weekend of July every year, people of all ages come together to celebrate this holiday, on vividly coloured boats in the lagoon. The fireworks begin late at night and there are races on the Sunday following mass.

This is one of the most highly awaited Venice events, bringing together cinema lovers from all over the world. In the running for more than 75 years now, the festival attracts top Hollywood stars as well as fans to Lido Island in Venice.

The city’s bond with water is celebrated every year in a dramatic fashion, by staging a wedding ceremony between the city and the sea. The mayor leads the colourful procession towards St. Mark’s Basin where a ring is dropped into the sea to symbolise the union.
