Places to visit on Neil Island

Neil Island is often compared to Havelock Island, as both are relatively close to Port Blair, and therefore, the first to be explored by tourists. Neil Island, however, is very different from the pulsating vibe of Havelock Island. A tranquil natural paradise, places to visit on Neil Island include many beautiful beaches and spectacular rock formations. Uncrowded and calm, it offers visitors much to see, with its magnificent bio-diversity, pristine coral reefs and tropical abundance. The island’s charm is enhanced by the quaint names of its beaches, named after mythological characters from the Ramayana. Each beach has its own unique attractions, which are worth a visit.

A broad beach famous for its variety of fish, large population of corals and perfect waters for swimming, Bharatpur Beach is one of the popular places to visit on Neil Island. You can hire glass-bottomed boats to view the exotic underwater marine life and colourful corals.

Popularly known as the sunrise beach, this is a picture-perfect beach with two curved bays and clear blue waters. Its sublime beauty draws yoga practitioners at dawn, apart from tourists. At low tide, you can walk from one bay to the other and explore the small caves around the beach. Sitapur Beach is also blessed with striking limestone formations and lush greenery.

One of the most underrated beaches, Ramnagar Beach is truly glorious, with its white sands, numerous shady trees and stunning coral reefs. The beach is close to many elegant resorts and offers breathtaking spots for snorkelling, making it one of the must-see places to visit on Neil Island.

Do keep in mind that on many beaches, swimming is not advisable during low tide, as the sharp corals and rocks can injure you.

Formed by living corals that meet in the shape of a bridge, this natural wonder was formed through the erosion of sea waters dissolving a substantial part of the rocky cliff. Local Bengali settlers fondly dubbed it the Howrah Bridge, and the name is popular with locals today.

Located between Bharatpur and Lakshmanpur beaches, this is the largest village market on Neil Island. Not only is it an interesting place to visit to absorb local culture, but the market also offers a beautiful, arc-shaped view of the beach.
