Best Time to Visit Hong Kong

Weather is one of the few concerns of Hong Kong locals who have been braving the city’s heat or windy typhoons because whatever comes, they just carry on with their work. It helps that several buildings in Hong Kong are interconnected, so many times people don’t even have to step out on the street. But if you’re visiting Hong Kong, it’s always a good idea to know the best time to visit Hong Kong so you are prepared and also to ensure that you don’t miss out on important festivals and events.

Hong Kong has four distinct seasons; each is unique and has its own attractions. Most people consider Hong Kong to be a year-round destination because the temperatures in each season are often tolerable. But Hong Kong also has a full social calendar that makes it imperative that you understand the best time to travel to Hong Kong so that you can have an amazing experience. Here’s a season-wise look at the best time to go to Hong Kong.

Spring in Hong Kong

Spring in Hong Kong is from March to May. The weather is warm but comfortable and typically between 18 to 25 degrees but can get humid at times. Hong Kong’s emblem, the bauhinia flowers are in bloom everywhere and it is quite delightful. The city is buzzing with a number of events at this time such as the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the famed Hong Kong Rugby Sevens event.

There’s also the Taste of Hong Kong festival at the Central Harbourfront along with several international pop acts and events. Spring is a great time for visits to outdoor destinations like Ocean Park and Hong Kong Disneyland because it’s not very hot yet and you won’t feel tired walking around and seeing the sights. This is why most people consider spring to be the best season to go to Hong Kong.

Summer in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s summer can be quite intense and if you’re not used to the heat, it could be quite difficult for you. The humidity is also a put off and some travellers are wary of visiting Hong Kong in the months from June to August. There’s a heavy reliance on air conditioning at this time. Hong Kong’s famous typhoons also make their appearance at this time of the year and they’re quite relentless. However, the good thing is that there are sunny days in between storms and the heat is always tolerable, making it perfect to visit the beach or rock pools.

But visitors do seem to love this time of the year because of the number of events they can join in, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Lan Kwai Fong Beer and Music Festival to name a few. Summer is also the best time to visit Victoria Peak, especially right after the rains because the air is clear, and the views are perfect. The advantages of visiting Hong Kong at this time is that many locals often head out of the city to escape the heat and the crowds are much less.

Autumn in Hong Kong

Autumn season is marked by the mid-Autumn Festival, which usually happens during mid-September, where people come together and celebrate with moon cakes and the Tai Hang Fire Dance. One of the things that appeals to most people about Hong Kong is its ability to balance the East and the West with such natural ease. Because when Halloween comes, the city celebrates with a number of themed festivities and there’s one in Ocean Park which is said to be quite spectacular.

If you’re looking forward to enjoying the city and its many faces, then do try and visit during this time. The weather is pleasant and sunny in autumn, making it perfect for all activities. Although autumn doesn’t last for long in Hong Kong, it’s wonderful to visit parks like Tai Tong Ecopark where you can see the beautiful autumn foliage or even the lovely Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens.

Winter in Hong Kong

The months from December to February are festive and fun for anyone who visits Hong Kong. Sure, there are crowds but there’s a lot of fun to be had at this time. As Christmas and New Year approach, Hong Kong malls are often decked up in outrageous, bling packed decorations. The weather is cold but always manageable. If you’re in Hong Kong during February though, be prepared for the Chinese New Year blitzkrieg though.

The entire city goes into celebration mode at this time and there are festivities and parties and a great occasion to visit all the amazing installations that are put up at this time. Most retail stores and shopping malls hold sales during this entire season and it’s like manna for shopaholics who can get the best possible deals at this time.

Hong Kong events and festivals take place throughout the year but some like the Dragon Boat Festival in June, the Chinese New Year in February, or Christmas during December are much awaited and anticipated. It goes without saying that during this time, the hotels have been booked far in advance and if you want to visit during these times, then you have to plan beforehand.
