Fort Hare

Castle of Good Hope

Fort Beaufort

Built in the year 1822, Beaufort was a blockhouse post which was closer to the mission station. It acted as the military post and a stronghold against the Xhosa’s raids. It is named after the Duke Beuford, who was the father of the first governor of the beautiful Cape Colony. Fort Beaufort was built after demolishing the original blockhouse. In the year 1839, an iconic Martello tower was constructed by the British. It was used for sea defense on the land. You can still find its remains here.

Voortrekker Fort

Also popularly known as Ohrigstad Fort, this spectacular fort was constructed in order to offer protection to the local Voortrekker families from the attacks of the Bantu people. Situated beautifully in the Ohrigstad region of Mpumalanga province, this area was under the Andreis Hendrik Potgieter’s leadership. Most of the fort now lies in ruins for was built by mud-brick layering and dry stone walling.
