The land of Buddhism, large expanses of green forests, ancient monasteries and dzongs (fortresses) have for long evoked curiosity amongst globe trotters. December marks the beginning of winter season in Bhutan. The temperatures are between 8 – 15 degree celsius during daytime and may drop lower at night depending on the part of the country you are in. Hence the weather is pleasantly cold with clear skies without any threat of snowfall or slippery roads interrupting travel plans.

For tourists other than those from India, Bangladesh and Maldives, a visa is needed and the minimum daily package has to be paid in advance which is either $250 during peak season months or $200 during off-season for Bhutan tourism. December falls in the latter category. Moreover, due to off-season, the subsequent expenses of 4-5-star hotel tariffs, cab fares, longer tours, etc. decrease while the availability of high-rated tour guides, better vehicles and uninterrupted scenery for pictures, increase.

Several festivals known as ‘tshechus’ happen throughout the year in Bhutan, celebrating the beginning of Buddhism and enlightenment in the country with prayers, meditation, a blast of colours and dances. The most popular are those in Paro and Thimphu that happen over April and September. Thus not many tourists visit during December, making all tourist zones less crowded, leaving more room for leisurely schedules.

National Day and Festivals

The national day is on December 17th celebrated for the coronation of the first king of modern Bhutan in the capital city of Thimphu. The celebrations which are attended by the royal family, include a ceremony, public address and traditional dances making it a great novel experience for tourists. Festivals such as Nalakhar Tshechu, Jambay Lakhang Singye Cham in Bumthang, Druk Wangyel Tshechu in Thimphu, Trongsa Tshechu in Trongsa and Lhuentse Tshechu in Lhuentse happen over December. The dates vary every year as they’re decided according to the auspicious days occurring in the Bhutanese calendar. Bhutan tour packages spanning over 10 days are recommended for attending festivals along with touring the country.

Top Things to do in December

Haa, Gangtey, Bumthang, Wangdue, Punakha, Paro and Thimphu are ideal in December. Explore the largest protected area in Bhutan – Jigme Dorji National Park, the uninhabited Torsa Strict Nature Reserve and the Thrumshingla National Park to watch several exotic birds and animal species. The Dochula and Cheli La Pass offer scenic backdrops. View several of the rare black necked cranes that migrate here now at the Gangtey (Phobjikha) valley. Go river rafting in the Mo Chhu river. Of course, do not miss the Tiger’s Nest and Paro Taktsang monastery!
