Viseisei Village –First landing

Gorgeous beaches, underwater marvels, lush landscapes and a fascinating culture are the highlights of Fiji. Besides the water activities and sightseeing, visiting a traditional village is among the best things to do in Fiji. The quaint Fijian villages are the places where you can actually experience the unique culture of Fiji. Village tours are often included in Fiji tour packages so that tourists can gain an insight into the exceptional Fijian culture. It also gives you a chance to discover the beautiful Fijian landscape featuring lush forests and verdant hills. The charming Viseisei village is the oldest settlement in Fiji and is a fascinating place to explore.

The beautiful village is nestled in grassy plains. The locals in the village live harmoniously with nature, so you can spot a variety of plantations and trees around the village. As soon as you reach the village, you will receive a warm welcome from the locals, especially the little children. If you want to enjoy the authentic village life to the fullest, you can opt for a homestay at the Viseisei Village. With a homestay, you can actually experience the simple life of the Fijian Villagers and enjoy delicious home-cooked meals. The local delicacies are prepared over open fires which gives food a distinct woody flavour. Here’s a list of things to do in Viseisei Village to make your stay more enjoyable: –

Enjoy The Local Drink Yaqona

Yaqona is the staple Fijian drink.  It is made from a pepper plant (piper methysticum) and only the root is used. It is first pounded into fine powder and then mixed into fresh water. The result looks a bit like muddy rain water and the slightly bitter taste is more offensive than it is pleasant. Yaqona is an important drink which is enjoyed on both traditional and social occasions. The drink is mildly narcotic and hence a feeling of calm will wash over you as you sip the Yaqona.

Explore The Craft Market

There is a tiny craft market located at the entrance of the Viseisei Village. The market features handicraft items which are made by the villagers. You can buy some of these itemso carry back home. Apart from the craft market, Fijian made crafts are easily accessible for purchase around Fiji. Some tours include activities where you can craft your own unique souvenirs.

Interact with The Friendly Locals

The locals are very friendly and inviting. So don’t be surprised if you get more than three or four dinner invitations on the same day. They will gladly welcome you into their home with the Yaqona drink and will often ask you for a picture. If you are invited to the village homes, it is customary to gift them food or buy stationary and toys for the children.

If you wish, you can also enjoy adventure activities such as trekking, rafting and kayaking along with your village stay. All in all, Viseisei Village is a great place to unwind and experience the simple Fijian way of life.
